Hello everyone an welcome to the Bob Allen Show. Today we have the new Philadelphia 76er's GM, Don, with us.
Allen- Thanks Don for taking the time to join us here today.
Don- Not a problem Bob, as i always have time for the media.
Allen- First question. With a bunch of teams still available why did you take the Sixers over maybe some other better teams available?
Don- Its all in the name. I have the Sixers an Rockets in other leagues an so i looked at those 2 teams here. The Rockets where already taken an so i took the Sixers as so its easier for me to keep up with my teams.
Allen- So nothing else like the players or such drawn you to the Sixers?
Don- Nope. I did not draft any of these players an so i have to attachment to any of them.
Allen- So you don't plan on keeping any of these guys?
Don- Not really. I would like to trade as many of them as possible for draft picks, cash, or maybe young players on rookies contracts.
Allen- Are you going to build the Sixers from the ground up through the draft like you have done with your other teams?
Don- That is my plan at this moment. I really would like to have my own players that i would like to develope.
Allen- So are you just throwing this season away?
Don- Not hardly. I haven't traded any one yet. This season will be determined on how the trades go.
Allen- So you are still going to put forth your best effort?
Don- For sure. You have to try to win the games if you can, an so our best players will still start until we get a chance to move them. If we win, we win, if we lose, then we lose.
Allen- So you dont consider this as tanking like some other GM's might think?
Don- First off i really don't care what other GM's think about how i go about building this team. Every one has a different approach to doing things, just like every one has an opinion about things. I think you have to gut your team down to nothing, bottom of the barrel so to speak in order to truly build it up. You cant do things half ass, you have to go all the way, an so thats what i am going to do. Gm's from the other leagues know me an my ways of doing things. Some might have raised their eye brows about it, but i think i did those rebuilds fair an quickly with in reason.
Allen- Do you think the fans of the Sixers will go along with this. They sure do not like a losing team.
Don- As with any sport, no fan likes a losing team. But all fans of my other teams know that i will go with them through a couple of rough years just to be able to put forth a decent playoff team built for the future. I like to build teams with young guys for a long playoff run. I never like to do things just for a quick fix that might last 1-2 years with older players.
Allen- So no older players for this team in the future?
Don- Yeah we will have older veterans for sure. But you have to get the core of young players first, then you can add a couple of veterans to fill out the roster to show the young guys the ropes.
Allen- So how long do you feel that you will be doing this rebuild?
Don- Most of the time after i get things going it might take me 2 or 3 years to gather some help through the draft, with the lotto gods help also i might add, before i start adding veterans to fill out the roster in hopes of making the playoffs. I have to get those 2-3 young core players to build around for sure.
Allen- So with in 2 years you will be play off bound.
Don- Did not say that. It all depends on how soon i can break down this team an what draft picks i can acquire during that process. Then i will have to have a little lotto luck along the way. It might take me this year to break up this team. Now if it all works out then 2 or 3 years down the road we might be in good shape.
Allen- Have you had any trade talks yet.
Don- No as i have just now taken over the team an posted my trade block. I don't think enough time has passed for all of the other GM's to see it.
Allen- Well we are out of time an so do you have any last words you might want to add to this conversation?
Don- Yeah just to tell the Philly fans to be patience with the rebuild an they will be rewarded in due time for their patience.
Allen- Ok again thanks for taking the time out to join us here today Don. And good luck with the rebuild.
Don-Your very welcome.
Allen- Well thats it, join us here next time for another episode of the Bob Allen Show.
