The #1 seed San Antonio Spurs took on the #4 seed Memphis Grizzlies and for the second time in as many rounds, the Spurs were taken to 7 games before finally emerging the victor to gain a spot in the inaugural Western Conference Finals.
How it happened:
Game 1 - The Spurs came out guns a blazin' and completely blew the Grizzlies off the court. Led by Starbury's 32 point, 10 assist game, San Antonio not only shot a torrid 50.5% (53.8% from beyond the arc) with 6 players scoring in double figures, they also held the Grizz to a paltry 29.1% while outrebounding them 66-48! Final score: Spurs 117-65 Grizzlies (Spurs lead the series 1-0)
Game 2 - Chris Webber took the previous loss personally and decided he wasn't going to let his team be embarrassed like that again but despite his Herculian 43 points and 18 rebounds, the Grizzlies fell short against the all-around team play of the Spurs. Final Score: Spurs 94 - 92 Grizzlies (Spurs lead the series 2-0)
Game 3 - Back in the friendly confines of the FedExForum, the Grizzlies were able to take advantage of home-court in a defensive battle which saw both teams shoot just over 41% and the Spurs front court tandem of Marc Jackson and Robert Traylor spending quite of bit of time riding the pine because of foul trouble. Final Score: Grizzlies 97-85 Spurs (Spurs lead the series 2-1)
Game 4 - In contrast to the previous game, both teams came out firing on all cylinders with 10 players scoring in double figures led by Webber's 32 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough to overcome the total team effort led Starbury (29 points, 16 assists) once again. Final Score: Spurs 116-110 Grizzlies (Spurs lead the series 3-1)
Game 5 - With the leagues 3rd best home record at 32-9, the Spurs headed back to AT&T Arena fully confident that they could finish off the Grizzlies and have a few days to rest up for the WCF, especially since the Rockets had taken them to 7 games in the 1st round. The Grizzlies had ideas of their own. Chris Webber once again lifted the team on his broad shoulders putting up the other-worldly stat line of 38 points, 24 rebs, 3 steals 5 blocks. Final Score: Grizzlies 92-79 Spurs (Spurs lead the series 3-2)
Game 6 - The Spurs, having learned their lesson about being overconfident, came ready to play back in Memphis. Led by the guard tandem of Marbury and Jones, the Spurs took an 8 point lead into the 4th but the Grizz fought back were able to eke out the win to send the series back to San Antonio. Final Score: Grizzlies 107-106 Spurs (Series all tied up at 3 apiece)
Game 7 - With both teams physically and emotionally exhausted from the hard-fought series and the momentum having seemingly swung in Memphis' direction, everyone expected another defensive, grind-it-out game. Surprisingly, both teams came out raining 3's and were making them at an astonishing clip. While the Grizzlies were making 50% of theirs, the Spurs bested them by shooting a whopping 70% with Eddie Jones going 4 for 4 and scoring 37 points to carry San Antonio into the WCF! Final Score: Spurs 110-106 Grizzlies (Spurs win the series 4-3)
I'm going to finish with the other matchups tomorrow...getting late and my eyes are tired....lol
