With the draft completed, I decided to go through the teams and see who the winners and losers were.
Which teams can compete right away and which ones will be building for the future.
Note: These observations are based only on the team rosters after the draft and don't include any trades or FA signings.
First, some statistics (please keep in mind that these are based on letter grades only since there is no statistical data with which to measure by):
The 3 youngest teams:
Warriors - 22.67
Sonics - 22.75
Heat - 22.83
The 3 oldest teams:
Kings - 33.08
Grizzlies - 32.75
Cavs - 31.75
Top best inside offense:
1st Hawks
2nd (4 tied) Celtics, Bulls, Jazz, Pelicans
Worst inside offense:
1st Cavs
2nd Blazers
3rd (2 tied) Lakers, Raptors
Top outside offense:
1st Pelicans
2nd Nuggets
3rd (2 tied) Jazz, Cavs
Worst outside offense:
1st Rockets
2nd (2 tied) Wolves, Hawks
Top handling:
1st (2 tied) Kings, Bulls
2nd Raptors
Worst handling:
1st Magic
2nd Knicks
3rd (2 tied) Heat, Spurs
Top defense:
1st Bulls
2nd Cavs
3rd Grizz
Worst defense:
1st Lakers
2nd Nuggets
3rd (2 tied) Mavs, Heat
Top rebounding:
1st Wolves
2nd (2 tied) Pacers, Knicks
Worst rebounding:
1st Bullets
2nd (2 tied) Nuggets, Raptors
Top potential:
1st (2 tied) Celtics, Blazers
2nd (3 tied) Sonics, Mavs, Heat
Worst potential:
1st Raptors
2nd (2 tied) Kings, Hawks
Now these are based on raw numbers and include the original 12 players drafted on each team so while significant, they don't tell the whole story.
In the 2nd of this series, I will narrow down the numbers to probable starters and based on what I'm seeing, there should be a major shift in the above rankings.
One thing I'd like to note is there were only 7 teams that rated neither best nor worst in any category, Suns, Clippers, Warriors, Bucks, Pistons, Nets and 76ers.
Of these seven, six of them are what I consider Vet teams with the average age of those teams at what would be considered their 'prime'. The Warriors (22.67 avg.) were the only team of those 7 with a young roster and their potential was 6th best.
Questions? Comments?
