This is an investigative report on the FBB Training Camp sim.
Please feel free to comment based on your experience and agree/disagree accordingly.
To start off, I examined the Lakers' results and have to admit, that while I'm never overly optimistic, this TC was extremely disappointing with the curious exception of one player, Dermarr Miller whom I will get to later.
Below are the resluts
Lakers TC (note: all potentials in parentheses are pre-TC):
Iakovos Tsakalidis (Age 23, B Pot) - up inside and handles
Keith Closs (Age 26, C Pot) - down defense
Tracy Shirley (Age 21, A Pot) - down rebound
Donnell Harvey (Age 22, C Pot) - no change
Darius Miles (Age 21, C Pot) - up rebound and potential
The Howitzer (Age 32, A Pot) - down potential
Shawn Marion (Age 24, C Pot) - down potential
Steven White (Age 19, A Pot) - no change
Tony Zeno (Age 22, C Pot) - no change
Dermarr Miller (Age 21, B Pot) - down outside, up defense, rebound and potential
Adrian Griffin (Age 28, C Pot) - down potential
Nicklaus Ekezie (Age 22, D Pot) - up potential to B
Hollis Copeland (Age 23, A Pot) - down potential
Travis Best (Age 30, C Pot) - up inside and handles, down rebound and potential
Khalid El-Amin (Age 23, C Pot) - up inside, down handles
Note: Up or down was one 'notch' with the exception of Ekezie who jumped two letter grades.
Also, the players bolded above are what inspired me to write this article and whose changes are, at a minimum, bewildering.
While I realise that TC can be a crapshoot, there are some things I've noticed (and expect) in my limited experience with FBB leagues.
'A' Potential players tend to increase the most, especially rookies if that's their true potential...some times jumping 2 or 3 notches in some skills, i.e. a C in handling jumping to A-.
'B' potential players generally improve one or two areas while possibly dropping another.
'C' potential players tend not to change much at all, maybe one skill up or down.
'D' potential players tend to drop in a couple of skills, esp. if they are older.
'F' potential players die.
I also realise that age is a factor and I was also under the impression that the amount of playing time the previous season also affects TC (that may be a myth but that's what I have been told by more than one Commish).
One other thing I realise is that, for rookies, their pre-TC potential is scouted potential.
Now on to the 'bewildering'....
1) Tracy Shirley (Age 21, A Pot) - down rebound to C
Last season's TC results: up to B+ in defense and C+ in rebound
How does a 21 yr old player with A potential and that got significant playing time last season (13.8 mpg) go down in rebound with no change in any other area?
2) Steven White (Age 19, A Pot) - no change
Really??? No change whatsoever?
3) Tony Zeno (Age 22, C Pot) - no change
This one is only slightly bewildering because of the C potential but I would still expect some change somewhere.
4) Hollis Copeland (Age 23, A Pot) - down potential
Another rookie whose skill ratings should have changed somewhere, esp. if his potential is B.
5) Travis Best (Age 30, C Pot) - up inside and handles, down rebound and potential
Last season's TC: down to B inside, B- handles and C+ defense
A 30 yr old Vet who only received backup minutes last season reverses the effect of last season's TC in his two most important skills. Frankly, his drop in rebound and potential aren't surprising.
6) Khalid El-Amin (Age 23, C Pot) - up inside, down handles
Last season's TC: up to B handles and C- rebound
A starter at PG for the Lakers last season for all 82 games, he was being counted on as one of the more solid PG's in future seasons if he could improve his handling even more.
So what happens? His handles dropped from a solid B, two notches to C+ while improving his inside (not his best shot type and virtually useless). And he's only 23!
This begs the question, Why bother wasting money camping him at this point?
And for the real ball-buster...
7) Shawn Marion (Age 24, C Pot) - down potential to D
1975 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
1975 - All-Star Game Participant
1975 - All-Defensive Team
1976 - All-League Third Team
1976 - All-Defensive Team
Last season's TC: No change
How does a 24 year-old player destined for super-stardom not improve in ANY area for TWO seasons, and further, drop in potential this season???
Now for the Curiosity that is Dermarr Miller.
Last season's TC: up outside to A- and defense up to B-
He was the 6th player chosen in last season's 2nd round and averaged 15 mpg in 81 games.
His performance on the court was pretty ineffectual and was a fairly solid player off the bench...and that's probably being generous. (5ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.4 apg and 1.4 topg).
TC was overly kind to him in that he improved in defense, rebound and potential while dropping in outside.
I want to compare TC's for a couple of different teams to see if there's some pattern to TC or is it as random as it seems.
If you have your pre-TC ratings, please pm them to me if you would like to help me out.
Unfortunately, I was only able to copy a couple of teams pre-TC ratings before the index was updated.
To be continued...
